TAIPEI, (D5) - Malaysia were handed a 3-2 defeat by Taiwan, albeit with some help from referee Vo Minh Tri, but still qualified for the next stage of the World Cup qualifiers on goal difference after winning the first leg 2-1.
Malaysia will now meet Singapore on July 23rd for their first leg match in Singapore.
Vietnamese referee gave the Taiwanese three penalties, the third of which a soft penalty as replays showed there was minimal contact between goalkeeper Sharbinee Allawee and the opposing forward.
The Harimau Malaya were far from their best and often found themselves struggling to string together complete passes at the Taipeh Municipal Stadium.
Taiwan had an early chance when Xavier Chen failed to latch onto a cross on the left in the second minute with a gapping goal infront of him.

Taiwan then pulled one back in the 32nd minute when the Malaysian defence failed to clear the danger, allowing Taiwan's Xavier Chen to pounce on the loose ball as they drew level on 1-1.
Malaysia went ahead again in the 38th minute through another free kick, when captain Syafiq Rahim blasted home a stunner to send K. Rajagobal's boys 2-1 ahead.
With two minutes to go, Mahali Jasuli gave away a penalty when he tripped a Taiwan player in the box and the resulting spot kick was tucked away, although Sharbinee did get a hand to the ball, for both sides to go into the interval at 2-2.
In the 60th minute, Taiwan won a second penalty when Fadhli Shas was caught tugging on the opposition's shirt, but Sharbinee saved well to keep the score at 2-2.
Taiwan won their third penalty when Sharbinee was adjudged to have brought down a taiwan forward in the box. But replays showed that the player went to ground after minimal contact with the goalkeeper who was yellow carded as well.
Belgium based Xavier Chen made no mistake from the spot to put Taiwan ahead for the first time in the match.
Substitute, Fakri Saarani, almost drew Malaysia level in the 78th minute, but his header sailed over the crossbar.
There were anxious moments at the end for Malaysia but Sharbinee was in top form as he made two superb saves to see Malaysia into the next round of qualifiers later this month.
