STEVE BRUCE will open talks with Wes Brown and Darron Gibson inside the next 48 hours.
Sunderland manager Bruce has agreed a £12million deal to take the two Manchester United stars plus John O'Shea. But with O'Shea not sure on a move to Wearside, Bruce will crack on and try to nail down Gibson and Brown while their team-mate makes up his mind.
The Black Cats boss is also in the market for Birmingham's Craig Gardner.
Bruce believes Gardner is the player who can provide goals from midfield - a quality they lacked last season - and is ready to raid his former club with a £5m offer.
Sunderland will have to haggle with the Blues, who value Gardner at £10m and know Newcastle are among a host of other interested clubs.
But the 24-year-old looks certain to be on his way out of St Andrews - and could be joined at the Stadium of Light by team-mate Seb Larsson.
Spurs striker Peter Crouch and Wigan winger Charles N'Zogbia are also still high on Bruce's wishlist.
