Manchester United have reportedly won the race to sign Udinese winger Alexis Sanchez for £27million with the Chilean star set to agree a deal in the coming days.
According to the Daily Mirror, United chief executive David Gill flew to Barcelona yesterday to meet with officials from the Italian club who had been in discussions with the European champions. Both Barcelona and United's city rivals Manchester City had been strongly linked with a move for a player that has built a reputation as one of the most exciting attacking midfielders in world football.
Sanchez first rose to prominence during the 2010 World Cup in South America when he starred for Chile and attracted interest from a host of European clubs.
Turkish side Galatasaray made an offer of €20million in the summer of 2010 but Udinese decided to hang on to their star player for at least another season.
However, Sanchez's star value has only increased over the last 12 months and now the 22-year-old seems destined to leave Italy with Manchester United hopeful they can secure a deal in the coming days.
Udinese are desperate to make as much money as possible on the sale of Sanchez and are hoping that they can start a bidding war between the Manchester sides and Barcelona.
City had been hopeful of convincing the South American star to choose Eastlands after landing Champions League football and sent Gary Cook and Brian Marwood to Italy to begin negotiations.
But it seems Sanchez prefers a move to Old Trafford and Sir Alex Ferguson is desperate to provide some fresh faces to his midfield with Paul Scholes retiring and Ryan Giggs approaching the end of his glittering career.
With Barcelona now seemingly missing out on Sanchez they may well turn their attentions back to Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas who has once again been linked with a move to the Catalan club.
