Manchester United defender Wes Brown will be the first casualty in manager Sir Alex Ferguson’s make-over of the club.
The 31-year-old will be sold this summer following a row with Ferguson because Brown demanded more first-team action.
The ex-England international has not played since being substituted at half-time in the 1-0 victory over Bolton Wanderers in March.
Brown has now slipped behind Fabio, Rafael and John O’Shea in the pecking order for the right-back place and with his age against him Ferguson has decided to call time on his Old Trafford career.
Brown, who made his United debut as an 18-year-old in 1998, has never managed to fulfil his potential at United as a succession of injuries limited his availability.
He seemed to finally have made the breakthrough in the 2008 Champions League-winning season, when he made over 50 appearances and played in the final win over Chelsea.
But his demotion is a blow for Brown, who quit international football in August to concentrate on his career at Old Trafford.
The Daily Mirror reports the defender is likely to be a target for Everton, while Bolton boss Owen Coyle is also tempted to sign Brown, who only has one-year left on his current deal.
