November of 1986 Changed the future of English football forever. United appointed then-Aberdeen manager Alex Ferguson, a hire that shocked British Football after he successfully ended the dominance of Rangers and Celtics in the Scottish League during his time at the helm.
He had also received offers from Tottenham, Rangers, Arsenal and Wolves but due to his loyalty to Aberdeen, he rejected them all.
Ferguson eventually left Aberdeen for Manchester United in 1986. His first three seasons were subpar, but nobody in the world could have predicted the success that he would go on to accumulate in the following 21 years.
The owners were patient enough and 24 years on, Ferguson and United have won 11 league titles, five FA Cups, four League Cups, two European Cups and one FIFA Club World Club trophy, which has made Ferguson the most successful manager of all time.
Many look to Mark Robins goal's in the semifinal of the FA Cup as the goal that saved Ferguson's career at Old Trafford. United would go on to win the Cup. Many also look to the signing of Eric Cantona as the start of a new United era in the Premier league that would go on to win countless amounts of league titles, but the fact of the matter remains that United's success boils down to Alex Ferguson.
United has continued to do exceptionally well even though many predicted them to struggle after the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez. United would in fact go on to lose to Chelsea by one point the following season and were also ousted by Bayern Munich due to a marvelous goal by Arjen Robben in the Champions League quarterfinal.
The loss of the Premier League title and Champions League enhanced arguments that United's incredible run of glory was over. But the fact of the matter is that United is here to stay, as proved by its performance this season.
Ferguson's tactics, transfer dealings, mentality, and training for his players are second to none. He has an incredible amount of wisdom that he uses to identify, and develop the potential in young players. He knows talent.
Chris Smalling and Javier Hernandez were signed by United for a mere 13 million Euros combined. They both have contributed heavily this season as United are on pace for a treble. Ferguson saw the potential these young players had while other big clubs such as Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester City and later Chelsea were too busy trying get big names such as Ozil (interested United), Villa, Yaya Toure and Fernando Torres respectively.
Ferguson will forever be remembered as the man who took this club on his shoulders for 24 long years and also has given this club remarkable amounts of glory. Hopefully whoever takes over United after Ferguson is gone can maintain the same kind of success and tradition that he has created and continued.
Let it be known that Mourinho is not the man for this post. We don't want him. What United should want is consistency and the fact of the matter is that Mourinho likes to skip around many clubs. United is about consistency and having success over a long period of time. The football club should hire from within and I believe Ryan Giggs would be perfect once Sir Alex retires. It would be up to him whether he wants it.
