Redknapp Set to Make Shock Move for Manchester United Star Defender

Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp is set to make a shock move for Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand when the summer transfer window opens for business.

Redknapp is a huge admirer of Ferdinand, and the pair know each other well from their time at West Ham. The Spurs boss was in charge at Upton Park when Ferdinand came through West Ham's Academy and broke into the first team before and £18million move to Leeds United in 2000.

According to reports in the Evening Standard, Redknapp was keen on acquiring the defenders signature 12 months ago, but was told that Ferdinand would not be for sale at any price.

However United now have six centre-backs at Old Trafford and have recently signed Blackburn defender Phil Jones.
The Tottenham boss is desperate to find a top class centre-back as cover for the injury prone due of Ledley King and Jonathan Woodgate.

Woodgate's future at White Hart Lane is in doubt with the players contract expiring in a couple of weeks, and King is entering the final year of his contract.

Now Spurs have shown an interest in the 32-year-old England international, the Old Trafford club may looking into a possible player plus cash deal with Luka Modric moving in the opposite direction.
Speaking about the defensive situation at White Hart Lane in April Redknapp said: "I've told the chairman many times that it's not always abut the best players, it's about getting characters.
"Chelsea and United have had it over the years. William Gallas has given us experience and we've got Michael Dawson at the back but to keep progressing you need leaders. You can't have too many at your club."
During his time at Old Trafford Ferdinand has won five Premier League titles, two League Cups and one UEFA Champions League.
