Rooney worry for Reds

Wayne Rooney will be assessed by United just hours before the Champions League semi-final second leg clash with Schalke, as the striker tries to overcome the injury that kept him out of Tuesday's open training session at Carrington.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Tuesday afternoon, Sir Alex said of Wayne: "He didn't train this morning. He has a tight hamstring so we left him today. We'll see what he's like tomorrow."
Rooney's absence from open training wasn't in itself a matter of concern, given that he has previously missed such a session prior to playing in the subsequent match. For example, in the wake of his Upton Park media storm, the United striker trained indoors and away from the spotlight on the eve of the Reds' quarter-final win at Chelsea, where he scored the only goal.
Sir Alex was not asked about the other notable absentee from training, Fabio, but he did announce some better news in that Darren Fletcher "will play some part" against Schalke. The Scotland captain hasn't featured in the Reds' first team since the 3-1 league defeat at Liverpool on 6 March but after returning to action in the reserves last Thursday, he's now deemed ready for senior duty.
"Darren Fletcher will play part of the game tomorrow night. He's working hard and he'll be involved," confirmed Sir Alex.

The manager admitted that the increased significance of this weekend's match against Chelsea in the Barclays Premier League will have a bearing on his team selection for the Schalke game.
"There'll be some changes," he reiterated on Tuesday, having said on Sunday that Dimitar Berbatov, Michael Owen and Paul Scholes will all come in to freshen up his starting eleven.
The full list of players involved in the open training session - as reported earlier in Today at Old Trafford - was as follows:

Goalkeepers - Edwin van der Sar, Tomasz Kuszczak, Anders Lindegaard
Defenders - Patrice Evra, Wes Brown, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, John O'Shea, Rafael, Chris Smalling, Jonny Evans
Midfielders - Antonio Valencia, Nani, Ji-sung Park, Michael Carrick, Anderson, Darron Gibson, Paul Scholes, Darren Fletcher, Gabriel Obertan, Bebe
Strikers - Michael Owen, Javier Hernandez, Dimitar Berbatov
