Harry Redknapp wants Old Trafford star to make White Hart Lane return.
Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp will this summer attempt to lure former striker Dimitar Berbatov back to White Hart Lane with the promise of regular first team football and a longer term contract than the Bulgarian is reportedly being offered by Man United.
Redknapp is desperate to freshen up his attacking options having seen his current crop of strikers all fail to make an impact this term, a failure that helped lead to Tottenham failing to retain their spot in the top four.
Sir Alex Ferguson has opted to leave Berbatov on the bench for the majority of the last couple of months, a decision that has left the 30 year old wondering about his future at Old Trafford. The fact that even though he is the Premier League’s joint top scorer will make the cultured striker wonder what he would have to do to ensure a regular spot in the Man United starting eleven.
Ferguson has opted for a front pairing of Javier Hernandez and Wayne Rooney, a partnership that has been very successful and clearly one the Scot sees as being for the long term, leaving Berbatov to wonder about his future at the club.
During his two years at Tottenham Dimitar Berbatov became something of a cult hero before he left on summer transfer deadline day in 2008 after netting 46 goals in 91 starts for the club. Having seen the likes of Robbie Keane (before his loan move to West Ham, Jermain Defoe, Roman Pavlyuchenko and Peter Crouch all struggle to find the back of the net, a move for the former star would be a wise one and with just a year left on his current Man United contract, would perhaps not be a hugely expensive one either.
The fact that the striker could be purchased for a reasonable fee means that Redknapp could offer the in form Berbatov a long term deal with a competitive salary which may head off interest from prospective suitors in Germany and Italy.
